English Literacy

Our English Literacy Program provides a basic knowledge of English to students in orphanages and rural school areas.
Our programs are conducted by American volunteers during the summer and Sri Lankan volunteers throughout the year.
The programs also provide educational materials.

My goal was to assist students in Sri Lanka develop their understanding of the English language by working closely with the Sri Lankan school curriculum. I found districts in rural communities where resources were minimal. It is my belief that English is the gateway to other worlds, and to become truly internationally competitive, knowledge of the English language is essential. I knew if these children were given the chance they would utilize the resources provided to their full potential. I created lesson plans consisting of games, activities, pictures, worksheets, and flashcards.

I coordinated volunteers to run the program in Yatiyana College for over 40 sixth graders in 2007. In the summer of 2008, I coordinated volunteers to teach the same course at the Sarvodaya Orphanage.

If you would like to volunteer in any way, please contact us.
